AblationWorks
What does it mean for a machine to understand?
AblationWorks is an independent research lab. We are interested in intelligence, natural and artificial. We keep returning to the stubborn distance between systems that appear to understand and systems that actually do.
Much of what we believe about why these systems work is folklore: stories told after the fact. We would rather test our ideas than take them on faith, and follow the evidence wherever it leads. A good question is worth more to us than a settled answer.
Questions we sit with
- What separates a system that understands from one that only behaves as if it does?
- Why do these systems succeed in some moments and fail in others?
- Can we trust what a machine does without believing what it says?
